About

Maarjamäe Memorial ensemble can be considered the best example of Estonian modernist landscape architecture – its first stage (that was never completed) was opened on July 18th 1975.
The environment which suggests eternity and commemoration is composed by nature itself – high limestone cliffs, the sea and the sky, grassy slopes, grey dolomite and sunshine topped with eternal fire. The oldest part of the ensemble was established in 1960 and its 35 meters high obelisk is dedicated to the retreat on ice (the retreat of the Baltic Fleet) – the architect was Mart Port, bronze reliefs by Lembit Tolli. There is also the powerful sculpture by Jüri Palm, originally with the eternal fire flickering in the gigantic palms.
Guided tours on Saturday and Sunday at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 pm. Meeting point is by Memorial to Victims of Communism (it is situated next to Maarjamäe Memorial).
